Secondly, no, it's not as bad. I don't think anyone's managed to get a genocide death toll as high as Hitler

I don't really think the point is the numbers. It's the cold planning and industrial execution that gives me chills.
Added to that, the phenomenon of an entire country turning their backs, whistling and pretending nothing was happening while their neighbours were dragged off to be gassed. (I tend to give people the benefit of doubt, but for various reasons it simply can't be that everyone who claimed ignorance spoke the truth.) In "regular" genocides (say, e.g. Rwanda), there's the perpetrators, the victims and the people who run away from it or hide in terror, but not millions pretending nothing is wrong and going on with their lives. (Not in the same country, at any rate.)
