Working at last
So, as some of you might already know, I have a job. It's only a summer job since I'm going to uni, but it's a good job never the less. It is also another of my stranger job. I am a steward on a narrowboat. Basically there's a company which takes tourists up and down London's canals- yes, London has canals. We even have a very nice little bay called 'little Venice'. Myu job is to make sure people don't drown, don't sink the boat, and cough up the money for the tickets. It's not a hard job, although it was really hard today because there were so many of them *sigh* bloody Easter weekend. Can't wait till it's over.
The job does have it's perks, I'm pretty much in charge on the boat, and the only other crewmember if the skipper, who steers the boat. It's a fairly straightforward routine and has reasonable hours. The pay's good, £6 per hour, going up at the end of the month, and it's quite a nice way of spending the summer, lounging around on a boat. There's a lot of free time, particularly when the boat's not so full, and even today I was able to spend a little time scribbling chapter five.
I totally love the boss too. She's the ultimate 'tough but fair' boss, and is very reasonable. I'd probably find her annoying if I had to work with her, but I don't. She's also great because she doesn't care if you're a bit harsh to the passengers if they do something stupid. (example, i asked her today what to do if someone had a screaming baby and it wouldn't shut up, her answer 'drop them off and let them walk'. As you can see, neither of us have much patience with babies).
So yeah, it's pretty good, five days a week, and the boss doesn't mind that I'm taking a few days off later this month. It's all good.
*hopes she can keep this job*
