Something I need people to understand when viewing this whole Venom comics controversy. Something a lot of people seem to misunderstand or simply not know:
Symbrock is not a headcanon. It is not a “fan ship” or “fan interpretation”. It is, without any possible doubt, a canon relationship. It is stated multiple times in the comics, in multiple runs. Most notably, and also most recently, the run just before Cates’ in which the characters used the word “love” in reference to the other and their feelings towards them and openly referred to themselves as being in a romantic relationship. It was also confirmed in absolutely no uncertain terms by the writer, Mike Costa, as being romantic in a closing letter at the end of the 2016 run.
This is, and has never been a controversy about shippers wanting a ship to be canon and the writer not going in that direction. This has always been an issue of an existing and long standing queer relationship being purposefully erased and now implied to have always been abusive and disgusting.
Eddie and the symbiote’s relationship is not a “representation” or “interpretation” of a queer relationship. It IS one. End of story. Eddie and the symbiote have been stated, in those words, to be romantically involved. Eddie is a man and the symbiote is agender. A romantic relationship between a man and an agender person is by definition queer. That’s just all there is to it.
Yes, it is completely within the power of each new writer to change, add, and get rid of romantic relationships, but that doesn’t mean that it was not canon before.
Please do not misconstrue this as a group of “shippers” being upset their wild crack ship wasn’t made canon. It’s long standing queer fans upset that existing representation is being discarded in a very patronizing and offensive way and that our concerns are being trivialized as a “ship war” when that’s simply not the case.
