The Fic That Ate My Brain
And how I came to write it.
May 2006- I go with
waset to see X-men: The Last Stand. We both hate it, and bitch relentessly about the various screw ups in the story. However, after the first scene with Charles Xavier and Magneto, I start wondering about a slash pairing between these two, if only to see what it would do to the story. Returning home, I start looking.
2 hours later- I fall irrevokably in love with this pairing.
May-July 2006- I start toying with a filmverse storyline where Xavier and Magneto reconcile a few years before the first film. All the events in the film are an elaborate facade to entrap Wolverine into giving his powers to Rogue so she can power the machine without dying. With Xavier's help, the machine actually works as it's supposed to, and the first film ends rather differently. I still love this little story, although I'll probably never write it. I also start dabbling in Comicverse.
July 2006- I pick up a book on the Holocaust to get some idea of Magneto's backstory.
Some time afterwards- I read Renata's Magneto/Xavier fic Evolution, one line catches my eye:
"Some of Charles's most haunting nightmares had been ones in which he, too, had been in the concentration camps. He was still chased by a persistent doubt-- if he had lived through what Erik had, would he still be certain his way was the right one? Would he even have been able to survive the camps? Would he have wanted to?"
The bunny bites. My fate is sealed.
July-September 2006- I try and ignore the bunny, but it refuses to go away and starts dragging me to various bookstores to do backstory research, as if making me write a story set during a historical period I know little about isn't enough, it also wants it set in comicsverse. I hate this bunny. I start cramming as much as I can manage of comic books and holocaust literature.
September 2006- The bunny drags me to the Imperial War Museum, I buy a small notebook and spend hours taking notes in the Holocaust section. Since I bought it, this notebooks (which is A6 -bloody tiny- and covered in cameoflage print) now has several dozen pages scrawled in some of my tiniest writing, detailing all the backstory in my fic. It's mostly useless since most of what happens in Past Tense is in flashbacks, but I'm glad to have the notes.
September-October 2006- I start seriously considering writing this story, if only because it's the only way I'm ever going to have any peace, anyway, by this time I've gotten aquainted with Xavier and Magneto's comic book selves, and decided that I now love Magneto very much indeed. He's now tying with Raistlin and Elric on my list of 'Favourite Characters of all Time' no idea if he'll stay there, but he's amazing, intruiging and easy to write, so it's a good start.
I am also starting to get suspicious at how everything (and I mean everything, up to and including tarot readings) is telling me to write this fic.
October 24th, 2006. I find out about NaNoWriMo through Roachspit. I cave to the inevitable, okay you bloody bunny, I'll write your damn fic.
November 1st- 30th- I kick seven kinds of hell out of the bloody plot bunny, and not only write my 50,000 words by actually manage to tie it off into something that actually resembles an ending. I rule.
December 1st (not quite happened yet) I am going to a Gangster Party with my friends, will get very drunk and probably try something illegal. Because I am freeeeee!
Ivory and Ebony plot bunny- *cradles a large bludgeon* that's what she thinks. Mwahahahahaha!
