real convenient of donny cates to start saying symbrock shippers are sending him death threats with no proof right around the time the criticism of his writing and his story arc has gotten louder and is expanding… real convenient of him to not only say ‘some people are sending me death threats’ but to SPECIFICALLY single out all symbrock shippers when theyve been the loudest critics of his work but also the easiest group to not take seriously as a bunch of lgbt folks and women in nerd culture…. real convenient….

I don’t doubt Cates has gotten threats. Everyone who has been on the internet for 5 minutes has. But AWFUL convenient for him to single out the symbrock fandom personally. Since I’m POSITIVE that, if he received any from this fandom, he certainly also received them from dudebro comic fans. I’d be shocked if that weren’t the case.
But how convenient for him to once again shift the topic so it becomes a “writer vs. angry toxic fandom upset their ship isn’t canon” and not “long standing queer and female fans constantly mocked and belittled by professional who is using long time queer characters as a mockery and parody of queer relationships in an offensive manner”
Convenient that it’s causing such instability in the Venom fandom, making the voices of dissent weaker and less organized.
I do believe Cates has received threats. Or at least, I wouldn’t disbelieve it. But the idea that it’s ONLY been symbrock fans? That it hasn’t been a single dudebro who sends daily death threats to every company that makes a female character or who dares look wrong at “their” comic? I refuse to believe that.
maybe there’s some way to make a stink without personally involving him at all? post in the venom hashtag? @ marvel? start sending marvel letters? get reviews posted on leagueofcomicgeeks and such? he’s just genuinely thoroughly manipulated this situation in his favour by focusing on all criticism = shippers = all harassment (which there absolutely has been, in general, like strings of insults and threats and videos of people burning venom books (which, lmao)). you’d need to get around that somehow. and it’s not like he’d ever unwrite his own writing or end his own run.
he’s gotten news publications on his side at this point. mostly just by using the word “shippers” a lot. it’s an instant shut-down-conversation button to hit.
the fact alone that he’s still talking about “shippers” and “the ship” and nobody ever got him to acknowledge that he’s decanonising a canon relationship and not just not making one canon says a lot. on no level could the cause of the outrage, even if we fucking presumed to live in donny’s fantasy land where it’s just about the ship, be compared to klance or whatever.
