it’s subtle, but… i think (i could be wrong) that nobody ever actually suggested peter’s costume may be alive in the originals, just that it’s weird and creepy. it does make a difference, not just by making peter look like a much bigger idiot, but by making the symbiote more intentionally deceptive.
I generally go with some variation or combination of two different ideas:
1) the symbiote genuinely believes it’s communicating with Peter. Symbiotes communicate with electrical signals and touch and chemicals, and it’s doing all that and Peter is letting it hang around. Clearly he likes and accepts it! The fact that he doesn’t speak to it isn’t worrying. None of its other hosts have talked to it, anyway. It has lots of practice in being the best tool and communicating with its host without words. (I heard a headcanon once that Eddie was the one who taught the symbiote to speak - it could always understand language and communicate through memories/concepts/emotions, but saying words was not in its skillset, and I love it.)
2) the symbiote is deeply, deeply terrified of letting anyone know what it is. It knows that other symbiote think its desire for a host is wrong, and it knows that other species think it’s a parasite. So it knowingly disguises itself because a one-sided connection is better than no connection. On some level it knows that Peter wouldn’t want it if he knew what it was, but it’s convinced itself that it can be a good costume and keep up the facade forever. It fantasizes that even if Peter finds out, it’ll have been such a good costume he’ll love it anyway.
That last part broke my heart a bit… ;;w;;
