Okay, friends and neighbors, I’m writing a Sherlock Holmes canon AU and I need to reference a common critter that might sneak into a house and scurry around making possibly scary sounds that might alarm or unnerve children in the night who are obviously prone to such unnervings.

Problem: I am not familiar with common British critters of that sort. I get a little lost after rats and mice, possibly squirrels, and I’m not even sure hedgehogs would sneak into a house in the first place, no matter how cute they are, but I think you get my drift.

Tell to me, O ye of Brit Crit knowledge, what denizens of the great outdoors is available to creep into a common British country household?

A lot of wildlife in the UK is very shy, I doubt you could get a rabbit or a badger in a house, for example.

If you want an animal of some size that would be curious enough to go in a house, I would suggest a young fox. They’re pretty fearless of humans and regularly forage in our dustbins. It would be easy to imagine one getting in through a kitchen door and going through the rubbish.
