This is basically happening in my D&D campaign and the DM is desperately trying to motivate us to go back to the main plotline and we’re just ‘yeah but we tried that and it’s one huge slog with you not giving us anything to go on, and only fun time we had with it turned out to be a three sessions long red herring’.
