A curious pattern

Why is it that everytime I discover a fandom/pairing I love, I've usually only got the vaguest idea about the canon? In chronological order:

Raistlin/Dalamar- Favourite pairing, all time OTP, bow-down-and-worship all around squeeable pairing. Number of Dragonlance books read before getting into pairing? One. And that was Dalamar the Dark. Colour me bewildered.

Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan- The pairing for whom I printed out the most fics (I have enough paper from Binky's 'Good' to wallpaper my room three times over), and for whom I still nurse a certain flame. Number of Star Wars films watched before getting into pairing? One (honestly, that was the Phantom Menace. I didn't see the originals until I was at the height of my love for that pairing, only two and a half years ago).

And at the moment, Erik/Charles- Actually really enjoying reading and thinking about this pairing and how it fits into the canon-verse. It's also probably doing more to wean me off Harry Potter than the other two combined, since I love Magneto and he could kick Voldemort's arse three times around the block. Amount of canon imbibed? Three films (all watched a grand number of once) comic-verse aspects and have no idea where to start, or even if I want to since I don't like most of the Marvel-verse, I prefer the setting of the Movie-verse. Unlike the first two, I didn't stumble across the pairings by accident. I was watching X-men 3 and it kicked me upside the head, I then went and deliberately looked for Erik/Charles fics. In keeping with my fine tradition, I'm only now wondering if I should pick up some comics.


More than that, all the pairings I like but don't usually seek out have been ones where I've read the books/watched the films before I looked up the fanfic. Aragorn/Boromir, Will Turner/Jack Sparrow, etc.
