The Day After Tomorrow
May. 16th, 2007 10:03 pmSo, it the classic big-buget hollywood movie, with little plot, huge special effects, flat characters and horrible contrived moments. The thing is, I love it to bits. I love the special effects, particularly the big where tornadoes wipe out California. Great fun. The whole bit with the wolves could have been cut out with nothing but a sight of relief though. Hated that bit, bloody stupid bit of shoe-horning with no point.
There are some genuinely funny moments and I absolutely love the shots of people crossing illegally into Mexico. Ohh, irony hurts ;) I also especially like the scene in the plane, when they fly into turbulance, there's a few tense minutes when the audience isn't sure if the plane will come down or now, than it finally stops, and when everyone (cast and audience) is breathing a sight of relief, there's a loud bang, and the gas masks come down. Surprisingly witty for a Hollywood flick.
Yes, the characters are flat, but they are likable, and this is one of the few film in which none of the characters actually annoy me too much. Having president look like George Bush and the vice-president act like Dick Cheney is just the cherry on the cake. Especially when the former dies and the later has to eat crow in front of the entire third world. Yeah, it's contrived, but it's fun. Much like the rest of the film, really.
I actually like a lot of the controved moments, actually. Not anything to do with the main characters, but those on the periphery. The whole part about the people heading south was actually quite poignant, and the helicopers rescuing the survivors at the end of the film always gets me, probably due to the soundtrack. Great soundtrack.
Anyway, I'll go back to watching it for the umteenth time. It's one of those films I can watch over and over again. And again.
