Jul. 30th, 2009 01:00 amThis is why I love this book I'm translating, it has all the dials cranked up to 11, they grab every sterotype possible and run with it until its too mad to behold.
I've just translated a bit of description which concerns a robot Stalin with a sexy woman's voice. It is guarding an old Russian bunker mean for members of the government and currently serving as the home of various incarantions of Russian myths. They live underground with a lot of mutant rejects and eat people and steal stuff. They are also the closest thing to 'good guys' I can find in this book. The titular Agency is retarded and both sides of the Russian civil war (communist bastards and capitalist bastards, with the communist bastards barely scraping the moral superiority) and vile.
Its as though they thought 'hey, let's grab everything remotely cool about Russia and bang it together like a deranged jigsaw.' They have Rasputin, they have Tenguska, they have Anastasia, they have Communism. They win a million poins from me for having Baba Yaga (she was always one of my favourite mythological characters). And they have a Great Partiotic War where I wouldn't be surprised if this happened. It's that kind of setting.
