Favourite Evil Characters
Aug. 6th, 2010 09:38 pmHeh, it might be best to ask my favourite 'good' characters. Although to be honest, my sliding scale of morality makes actually labling anyone as evil rather hard. I mean, is I&E Raistlin evil? He's a total bastard yes, but how do you quantify evil? Hell, is Johannes evil? I mean, I love him, he can be sweet and cuddly, but you can't ever lose sight of the fact that HE WORKS IN FLIPPING AUSCHWITZ!
So, that being said, a few characters who can only be described as evil:
1 - Fistandantilus: I know, I really ought to write more I&E, but frankly I can barely find time to work on AIoM at the moment. Anyway, I was never particularly enamoured with our favourite lich at first. He was only sort-of there in Chronicles and Legends, and didn't see to ever really do anything. Then Raistlin killed him and everything got confused. Then I read the Kingpriest trilogy (which I totally recc because despite not having Raistlin or Dalamar, they are some fo the best-written DL books) which cemented Fistandatilus as, while he was still a believable and compelling character, the most evil monster that ever walked the face of Krynn EVER. Seriously, I could not BELIEVE how evil that bastard was. I don't know if I did him justice in I&E, but trust me, whatever you might think of him from I&E, he's like a THOUSAND TIMES WORSE in the Kingpriest trilogy.
2 - Raistlin: Okay, I know what I said above, but seriously, even in I&E I'm under no illusions about the guy. He might be somewhat better adjusted in some respects and rather nice company if you're Dalamar, but none of this changes the fact that everyone else completely superfluous in his eyes. The only thing stopping him from becoming like Fistandantilus is that he doesn't have any major fucked-up plans.
3 - Orlando Crispe from Confessions of a Flesh Eater: Just because someone is a psychotic mess who eats people does not mean they can't be a lovable character! Crispe is my favourite brand of cheerful, enthusiastic evil which rides roughshod over everyone else while having a great time. See also: Josef Mengele.
4 - Voldemort: Frankly, I kinda went off the guy around HP6, but previously he had been by miles my favourite character. Why? He was awesome, and weird and rather confusing, and I really wanted to find out more about him and what made him such an awesome bad guy. Then HP6 came out and it turned of JKR hadn't the foggiest either and I went off him. Then Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality came out and I loved him again, if only because within a few chapters the author managed to do what JKR never managed: make me wonder "How the hell is anyone, ever, going to beat this guy?" ( spoiler )
5 - Josef Mengele: Dear god that was a mistake. Insane multiples of fun, but a big mistake. I wanted to get inside the fucker's head (I managed with almost every other nazi, but him I just couldn't get), succeeded, and now he doesn't want to leave and I have no idea what to do with him. I mean seriously, what do you do with deranged nazi doctors? Sell them? Catapult them into the sun? Write really bad slash fic with them? What?
