Questions for Kindle users:

I want to get myself a Kindle. If only because I really, really need to read Saul Friedlander's 'Years of Extermination' which is probably a tool of extermination itself considering it's heavy enough to kill if dropped from 2-3 meters. I can't cart around 2,000+ pages of hardback book and Kindle appears to be the best answer.

This has been really awkward because I think I've been recieving some bald-faced lies from sales people I've asked about this, particularly concerning the Kindle's acceptance of Word files. Does Kindle support Word? What about fanfic? Could I download my favourite fics from the net, paste them into word and load them onto my Kindle?

So, Kindle users (I know you're out there):

1) What formats does a Kindle support? I'm getting a lot of different answers here.

2) I understand that you can only buy books from Amazon, but is that only while using the Kindle's Wireless function or can you download books from your computer?

3) Can you download books already on your computer? Or do you have to buy them directly on the Kindle?

4) How fiddly is it? The internet access is cool but I'm really just going to use this to read. How long does it take to turn pages? I had a go with some Sony e-book readers and they took just enough time to get on your nerves. How easy is it to skip from one book to another?

5) Can I annotate pages, or mark those I need to check back later?

6) And what am I going to do with my dead tree format 'Years of Extermination'? Do you know anyone who needs a really lethal door-stopper?
