Dinosaurs Are So Weird Looking

Like look at their faces and claws. You can not look me square in the eyes and tell me the one on the left doesn’t look like a fucked up barracuda/alligator thing.
Dinosaur geek here and I must say, though I agree, I also feel the need to point out that you’re barely scratching the surface of how weird dinosaurs could get! That’s right, they get EVEN WEIRDER!
First off, the Spinosaurus up there is actually kind of outdated. This is what we think he looked like now:
Look at those tiny little feet! Now, it’s still thought that Spinosaurus was a biped, but it’d look infinitely less intimidating as it walked. Picture that thing waddling around like a duck and you can get a pretty good idea of what it’d be like.
Meanwhile, would you like to make T. rex jealous? Show him THIS insanity:
This crazy creature is called Therizinosaurus and it’s basically the Edward Scissorhands of dinosaurs. And it was a strict herbivore! The claws were used for both foraging from tree branches and protecting itself from predators.
And then there’s this guy:
This is Concavenator. What’s that thing on his back for? Your guess is as good as mine! Most people think that it was a display structure, but I really have no clue.
Also, it MIGHT have had tiny little wings on its arms. Yeah, really.
Oh, and check out this one:
This horrifying set of pearly whites are from Masiakasaurus. Allegedly, its teeth would be mostly covered up by lips in real life, but they do indeed protrude outward somewhat in the mouth and they’re thought to have been used to grip slippery fish more easily. Don’t worry though, Masiakasaurus is only six feet long.
Ooh, and then there’s this fine specimen:
This crazy bird boy is named Yi (current record holder for shortest dinosaur name of all time) and it’s basically as close as you’ll get to a real life cockatrice.
That is, provided that its wings aren’t actually a flying squirrel-like patagium! Yeah, there’s a good chance that this dinosaur actually looked more like a FLYING SQUIRREL.
Oh, and check out THIS:
This dude is Nasutoceratops. Look at those crazy curly horns!
And these little weirdos are called Heterodontosaurus, and they’re so named because alongside the peg-like teeth that most plant-eating dinosaurs have, they also have sharper, more tusk-like teeth. And while this might just be speculative, they likely had quills like hedgehogs!
Courtesy of the Saurian team, we have the oviraptorid Anzu, which looked like an unholy fusion of an emu, a turkey and a parrot. Can you picture that thing running around and honking at you or something?
But few of these dinos are as bizarre as the alpha and omega of dinosaur weirdness:
These here are the hands of a dinosaur known as Deinocheirus. For FIFTY YEARS these were the only evidence we had of this thing’s existence, and a lot of people had thought it was some kind of vicious predator until further analysis made them realize that it was an ornithomimid. Ornithomimids typically look like this:
So a lot of people had come to think that Dinocheirus would look like that. There was no way of knowing, though, because for fifty years all we had was its freakishly huge hands.
Then, in 2013, we finally, FINALLY got two semi-complete skeletons.
It looked like this:
‘Nuff said.
And this is STILL just scratching the surface!
TL;DR: Yes, OP, it is true. Dinosaurs are really freaking weird.
May I also offer a few contenders?
Fist up, we have this fine fellow, Carnotaurus. One of the more well-known “weird dinosaurs”, it had a head that was only about as long as it was tall, large triangular horns sticking sideways out of its eyebrows, and the most ridiculous-looking arms since Tyrannosaurus itself.
Also in the stupid-arms club, we have the Alvarezsaurids. These little guys had tiny stumpy arms as well, but what sets them apart is that basically their entire hand is just one big thumb claw. There’s two other little tiny fingers on there, but for the most part they look like they’ve got a pair of pincers for arms.
Moving out of Theropoda and into Ornithischia, and we get the wonderful weirdness of ankylosaurs. Those of you who saw my rather … enthusiastic campaigning for Pinacosaurus in Dinosaur March Madness will know what I mean. They’re just so bizarrely proportioned and like nothing we could imagine.
(Also bonus art by @psittacosaur because it’s just adorable and I love it)
Also in Ornithischia we have the adorable little floofball called Leaellynasaura. While it;s not confirmed to have had feathers, it was related to species that did. It was also very small, and lived in the antarctic, so it’s a pretty sure bet that these guys were fuzzy. Not only that, but they have a super long tail compared to their body length. The tail was very flexible, and could have been used in display, but it’s not clear at the moment.
Yet another weirdo ornithischian that I love / hate with a passion is Udanoceratops. It’s just so … weird. I know that’s the point of this entire post, but still. The hugely disproportionate head, the massive overbite beak …
Oh, and also the fact that it look like it should be a fairly small, primitive ceratopsian, but NO, this thing had to go and be unsettlingly gigantic. It’s like the size of a rhino:
Yeah … Udanoceratops, I love you, but I hate you.
This was a thing:
No wonder they went extinct.
