Can I just say how pleased I’ve been with the Venom/Symbrock fandoms after the movie came out? Like, I’ve only seen long time fans welcoming new fans like me with open arms. No “ugh posers only getting into it for the movie. You’re not a True Fan unless you’ve memorized all 6700 issues of the alternate universe yada yada….” I’ve only seen people being really excited to recommend their favorite comic issues and arcs and being genuinely thrilled about more people getting into the pairing. No “well it was different from the comics in such and such way and therefore is irrelevant, etc etc.” Only like “It’s a different and valid alternate universe version of the characters and that’s something that’s totally normal for comics and I love this interpretation of the characters alongside the comic version without having to draw unfair comparisons or being upset that they’re not exactly the same.”
Just like, A++. There’s often a lot of gatekeeping in comics, especially when a lot of hype is generated from something like a movie and I’ve seen almost none of that with Venom and that’s just really awesome.
This is the same thing that happened with X-Men Cherik shippers after First Class came out, we’d all been wandering around writing fic more or less for ourselves and then suddenly this huge rollercoaster packed with fans pulled up and was like ‘hop on, we’re going to the land of porn and angst! Oh, and your fics now have fifty more reviews out of nowhere.’
And it was awesome.
