The Eddie Izzard Doctrine

I didn’t go to uni for history to not reblog this

Eddie Izzard makes a good point.

Okay, but… what does she want us to do about it? Should the world have forced Cambodia to execute Pol Pot? How? Should there have been sanctions imposed on a struggling country because we didn’t like That One Guy? Should a kill team have been sent covertly into the country to assassinate him extra judicially?  Should there have been an invasion?

This is patronising colonial bullshit disguised as liberal hand wringing. If the people of a country decide the best way to get rid of a monster is to let is die naturally, respect that. They know their country better that you fo you white twat.

The Eddie Izzard Doctrine

“the people next door?” are you saying that jewish/roma/gay ppl aren’t german what the fuck is wrong with you lmao

You remember they began bombing the british and attacking neighboring counties, right?

More importantly, that’s when every other country started caring.

Nobody cared when Hitler killed all the German disabled people, all the German Jews, all the German gays, etc.

Aktion T4 started a full year before the war but nobody cared. Hundreds of thousands of disabled people taken from their homes and dragged to the very first gas chamber prototypes. And no one cared. Other minorities joined them. And no one cared.

But the second, the SECOND, a white abled cis straight life was threatened in the country next door, suddenly it was a Big Deal. Suddenly, everyone had to stop him. Too late. Literal years, millions of lives,  too late. But they weren’t lives that mattered to any other country. That’s what this person in the photoset is saying.

WWII was never a humanitarian project. It was never about saving the minorities. Multiple countries twiddled their thumbs and looked the other way until it directly impacted their safe privileged lives. Only then did it matter.

For God’s sake do you people ever study European History? The reason, the real reason why nobody reacted until Hitler invaded Poland was because of WWI. That’s right, because the HAD JUST LIVED A WORLD WAR THAT HAD MADE MILLIONS OF DEATHS AND LEFT THOUSANDS BROKEN AND DISABLED. WWI destroyed and traumatized Europe and when it was over they swore it would be the last. Especially since the reason WWI started was because of intervention due to alliances (even if it was really a pretext for Germany and France who had had unfinished business since 1871): there was conflict between the Austro-Hungarian empire and Serbia. And it rippled all over Europe because France was an ally of Serbia (along with Russia and England)and Germany was an ally of Austria (along with Italy and the Ottoman EMpire) and that’s how the entire country waged war on each other resulted in disaster.

So basically, it’s not that nobody cared about what Hitler was doing. Everyone was extremeley worried (especially when Germany made an alliance with USSR), but whenever people mentioned the possibility of declaring war on Germany everyone was like “Are you mad??? Do you want ore deaths, more broken lives? Have we not suffered enough?” And nobody wanted to go to war and die for governments who didn’t care for them. And could you blame them when there were still people who had lived WWI and lost people they loved in it? So they waited until they could no longer turn a blind eye (when Hitler deliberately broke treaties and invaded Poland).

I’m not saying they shouldn’t have attacked Hitler, and I’m not saying everyone was against him (Italy is a good example and fascists of all countries sided with him) but the reason the other countries waited so late wasn’t because they didnt care, it was because they were barely getting over a terrible world war that had devastated the continent only 20 years earlier. There were voices speaking out to condemn what Hitler was doing to Jews, disabled, homosexuals etc, but the voices who answered to refuse war weren’t just those of privileged people, they were those of pacifists who desperately wanted against all hope to stop History from repeating itself.

Not only that, but this is cheap garbage history. It demands we look at actions solely through a modern lens, without considering how it looked to people at the time. Take Nazi Germany. Should other nations have attacked Germany for their treatment of the Jews? Yes. When should they have done that?

1933- The Boycott of Jewish businesses? Are you really going to suggest a country should be invaded because of a boycott?

1935- the Nuremberg Laws? Shitty, but many countries had laws for racial minorities so that didn’t stand out much.

1938- The Kristallnatch pogrom? Billed by the Nazis as a popular uprising against Jews. We now know it was done by the state, but this wasn’t common knowledge at the time. Are you going to invade a country because they have a racially charged riot? Hell, it doesn’t make much of a difference because most countries were already gearing up for war at this point.

1940-1941- The Final Solution? Too late, everyone’s at war. WW2′s been on for 1-2 years already.

And this is just looking at military intervention as the only form of protest countries can have (which is so shitty I can’t even), this isn’t counting the boycotts of German goods, the sanctions, the protests. Operation T4 was driven underground because the Pope raised a massive stink about it.
