no actually you know what, having watched venom another three times i take it back. you know what i actually think happened, with eddie getting sent on the carlton drake interview?
i think drake asked for him specifically.
reporter boss guy obviously knows eddie well enough to know that interview was disaster bait, but he also made a specific point of two things: one, that carlton drake could buy out the whole building with his pocket change; and two, that no matter what, none of them are above the network. he clearly likes eddie, likes what eddie does, but he was all but begging him to just do the fluff segment on the rockets, which leads me to believe that he wouldn’t be sending him if he had any other choice.
and it makes sense that drake would ask for him, too, because think about it. drake is obviously very image-conscious, he has the polish down to a T, and he wouldn’t have lasted this long if he wasn’t very good at maintaining the right kind of public face. he’s definitely aware of the brock report, and the kind of things eddie has gotten into chasing his stories. so, in the wake of the rocket disaster - and in the midst of all the rumors flying around - what better way to allay suspicion than to get eddie ‘investigative chaos goblin’ brock to do a fluff segment on him? people know him, know what he does, and if he doesn’t turn up anything then maybe there’s nothing to turn up in the first place.
of course, it’s a win-win situation for him - either eddie caves to the network’s demands and gives drake the good press he’s looking for, or he doesn’t, in which case it wouldn’t be remotely difficult to just. promptly deplatform him. get rid of the potential spanner in the works.
i mean, as we see in canon, that eventually came back to bite him, but in the meantime look at where it got eddie: cynical, job prospects ruined, life effectively down the drain, and if it had been anything other than the venom symbiote in that lab, he would have been dead.
i think carlton drake knew exactly what he was asking for, when he was getting interviewed. i think he knew exactly who was doing the interviewing. and i think he knew that no matter what, he would get a beneficial outcome.
