I think everybody has an author or two he likes though they write rather questionable things or have a strange style. I can think up a lot of authors in whose stories I hate one thing and love another. And inventive situations can make up for a lot, I guess.
I don't know the books, but with that writing pattern, the guy should go to a psychologist. I'm pretty sure his delight in apocalyptic visions must come from somewhere... *g*
