9/11

I know 9/11 was tragic. I know a whole lot of people died. I know Osama Bin Ladin is a scumbag. I just am so sick of hearing about it I want to scream.

Okay, I'm English, I have always lived in old Blighty, I have never been to America (the closest I've been is Cuba), so I have no personal emotional envolvement in the attack. My response when my brother told me someone had flown a plane into the twin towers was: What? Don't they know how to fly over there?

I read disaster novels, I watch disaster movies, I read history books and know that the former two are nothing in comparison to reality. So when I watched that second plane smash into the towers, I did know what was reality and what was fiction. I knew there were people in there dying. Maybe I'm a cold-blooded bitch (and I'm not disputing that fact if you want to argue it), but my immediate thought were of who could have done this. Who had the Americans pissed off to this extent. Because fuck, the American government should have seen this one coming. You can't fuck with people this much and not expect them to fight back. You've got bigger weapons, more troops, yadda, yadda, yadda. So they're not going to attack your army, they're going to attack your people, those who can't defend themselves. And, to be brutally honest, if all of those in the twin towers had been people who, over the years, had exorted, bullied and destroyed countries, my reaction would have been 'payback's a bitch'.

Unfortunately for everyone, they weren't, and a lot of innocent people died. But how many more people died in the wars America financed? How many people died in the regimes America set into place? Yeah, a whole lot more. And do you know what? These people don't get a bloody day of rememberance. There is no Vietnam Day, at least not here, for all those people who died in one of the most stupid wars known to man, despite the fact that they eclipse by miles those who died in 9/11. They were innocents there too, and they died. There were tactical strikes on the civilian population (you notice that the president didn't use the words 'collateral damage' when it came to 9/11?), just like in 9/11. What happen on September the 11th, 2001 was not unique. Perhaps it was to America, but America is not the world. If you have lost family members to the attack then I am sorry. I know this is going to piss a lot of people off, but this is truely how I feel. I know would feel differently if someone I loved died in the tragedy, but they didn't so I can be objective.

For the note, this is not meant to be a rant at the Americans who are posting memorial photos in your LJs, it's your right and I'm not disputing that. I'm just mad because every bloody channel here is about 9/11. It wasn't fucking unique and if you stop fucking with people's lives they'll stop wanting to take revenge.

Let the flaming begin.
