I read a few bits of The God Delusion on the BBC News website. One of them was going on about the bible condemning homosexuality and the whole Sodom and Gomrrah story. Apparently the one guy who was deemed worthy to be saved was visited by a couple of 'male' angels (see, I thought angels were asexual) and told to leave the city. While he's entertaining his guests, some blokes turn up at the house and want to meet these new people so they can 'know' them (hehe...for some reason, 'know' in the biblical sense makes me snigger). So this guy who is supposed to be a great example of humanity offers the men his two young daughters because despite all the no-sex-without-marriage stuff, sex with them is okay because they are female.
Now, I know very little about the bible. I used to own one but I have no idea where it is otherwise I'd look this up. I have no idea if this is really in there or if its just hearsay. But if it is in there, I don't know why but something about it makes me feel vaguely ill.
Also I hate the whole hellfire and damnation thing. Firstly, I hate the thought that I am apparently going to suffer eternal torment just for being who I am, but secondly because the biblical 'God' is supposed to be merciful. Punishment is one thing, but eternal torture with no hope of ever redeeming oneself doesn't seem very fucking merciful to me.
