Hushed up? Huh! Seems pretty common knowledge to me, and WWII isn't remotely my area of study! I think it was even mentioned in school at some point. And seriously, with most of Germany in waste and ruins, doomed to pay off two wars' reparations till kingdom come, it wouldn't have been an entirely far-fetched idea to declare it a third-world country altogether. It's not like anyone could foresee the quick rebuild and Wirtschaftswunder back then.
