I had the exact same reaction to the trailer, but yes, this post has made me seriously reconsider (though I still probably won't see it on big screen - my loss, I guess).
And optimism about humanity / the species as a whole (as opposed to just the one nationality) as hero - great!
On the other hand, I can sort of see the point of the Avatar scenario (haven't seen the movie, and no interest in ever doing so). By all reports it was terribly executed, but while I'm all for optimism, I'm also in favor of fighting the arrogance which is virulent in my country (the US), and doubtless elsewhere. I think there's a case to be made for an occasional reminder that - as great as the human race is - we're also our own worst enemy, and we really ought to clean that shit up.
