I’m so glad someone put it into words.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a legend, and he’s absolutely right.
And I really feel like there are parts of fandom that don’t get or don’t believe this, and I think that’s troubling. I’ve seen arguments that people shouldn’t have dark fantasies, or that bad impulses in themselves make a bad person. I’ve seen so much shaming over thoughts.
And if you get to a point where it’s bad to have dark thoughts and it’s bad to wonder what something would be like and it’s bad to put yourself in the shoes of anyone who isn’t “pure”, if fiction is no longer a realm where you can confront and explore, but an ongoing test of moral purity… well, maybe not everyone’s brain works like mine, but I feel like that takes away something incredibly important to being human.
Purity culture is gonna kill art if y’all let it.
We live with a younger generation who seriously believe that censorship is more important that creativity.
I’ve never understood this. Tumblr is pretty amerocentric, so many people here actually come from a culture influenced by Puritan thought, and given the number of lgbtq blogs on here, I’d assume many of them clashed with that society. But somehow the idea of being “pure” is still in people’s minds, and it’ll be persued with the same religious zealotry (including pressing it on everyone else); it’s just that what is considered “pure” has changed a little.
Okay, wait, addendum: I was just scrolling through the notes, and a significant number of people say stuff like “yes, I agree, but X is taking it a step too far, X is gross and should never be written about”. First, that sort of defeats the point? But—more importantly—why is X always child pornography? How is sexual abuse of a minor—horrid as it is—the thing people see as the single worst of all evils? I literally read a comment that was like “yeah this is right about murder, but jerking off to children is […]”, and I’m just, what? Are humans so obsessed with sex that sexual exploitation of a child is a worse crime than literally ending a life? (and it always has to be sexual; child labour or just plain old emotional abuse can presumably wreck one’s life with similar trauma, but seem to interest close to no one) If so, as mathematician I must ask: does that scale? Is killing a hundred people still better than one child’s rape? Is a fantasy of genocide—and all that it might spark—more acceptable than a few lines of child pornography?
[insert here a rant about how this morality enables US scandals of the likes of “pizzagate”, and the idea that anything Trump does or might yet do is justified because he fights against child trafficking, which is apparently something some people really do believe …]
I guess if I had to choose one crime to trump all others it would be murder. A child victim of rape may be traumatized or even suicidal, but they’re still alive, and still have life’s infinite potential. It seems weird to value that life less than death.
Also to everyone saying ‘but…. but… child porn!’ Guys… unless it actually involves a child it’s not child porn. You could write a baby jacking off another baby and net damage it does to any actual children is zilch.
