Alan Moore, writing Watchmen: “The superhero fantasy is authoritarian and even fascistic.”

Nerdy Fanboys: “Awesome!”

Alan Moore:

Alan Moore: “No that’s… that’s not awesome.”

Chuck Palahniuk, writing Fight Club: “Some movements that claim to overcome alienation simply recreate it to the benefit of fascistic demagogues.”

Nerdy Fanboys: “Awesome!”

Chuck Palahniuk and Alan Moore, in chorus: “What is wrong with you people!?!”

The Wachowski Sisters, writing The Matrix: “The reality you think you see around you is a system that draws its energy from your body, exists by keeping you trapped in its illusions, and so long as you live within it can turn you into its agent at any time.”

Nerdy Fanboys: “Oh… like feminism and trans people?”

The Wachowski Sisters: “GODDAMMIT NO!!!”

De Palma, Stone and Pacino, writing Scarface : “This is the tale of a character with corrupted ideals, who after having reached the top by doing horrible deeds after horrible deeds, ends up falling and losing everything, his love, his family, because he couldn’t keep his megalomania in check and dies.” Fanboys : “Tony Montana is my life model.”

De Palma, Stone and Pacino

: “You’ve only registered the fact he became wealthy at one point, did you ?”

This is a real problem with a lot of media that seeks to cover a topic in order to condemn it- you have to be really, really careful not to make that topic too cool.

Other examples would be American History X or Inglorious Basterds, where the neo-nazis and nazis in the stories end up looking rather more awesome than the good guys, and are actually used by neo-nazi groups as recruitment, ironically. The main characters are just too awesome for even the overt condemnation of the writers and directors to outweigh it.

(Christoph Waltz, I’m looking at you)

I’m not saying these are bad, or that the authors or directors should have done things differently, but it is a factor when making a movie about how bad something is- ‘can the people I hate use this to further their agendas?’

Incidentally, you can do this- Tarantino corrected course magnificently with Django Unchained, I can’t see anyone using Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in KKK recruitment, let alone the portrayal of the KKK itself. Being stupid and ignorant with bad teeth tends to put people off.

Also The Producers. Dear God, the Producers.

Just something that we, as creators, need to keep in mind.
