It’s 4am and I just woke up thinking about Snape. You know, as you do. I know that he’s a… difficult character and there’s a lot of… conflicting views surrounding him, but here’s mine:
He had amazing potential to become one of my favourite characters in the books. The concept? Great! The execution? Not so much.
Mind, that’s just my opinion and my taste in problematic, morally ambiguous characters is incredibly specific. I might elaborate on what I’d change in him someday, perhaps when I’m more awake. Idk, I just feel like he could’ve been written differently.
Also, he didn’t deserve to have Harry name his kid after him and neither did Dumbledore. This is a hill I will die on.
It doesn’t matter how cool or ambiguous he is, he’s an adult bully who torments kids, and that just isn’t cool for me.
I mean Snape is certainly worse than most of the other teachers with some notable exceptions but personally I can’t really apply my own real-world standards regarding acceptable levels of child abuse when reading Harry Potter otherwise my head would explode, so eh. I have to say I understand both the staunchly anti-Snape crowd (he is pretty horrible!) and the Snape fan crowd (suspension of disbelief is a thing and from what I remember the series seems to position his actions as within, or at least not far beyond, the range of normal teacher behavior, plus you know *gestures at Alan Rickman* I’m not the sort to judge people liking a character on aesthetic grounds).
tl;dr there isn’t a single adult character in Harry Potter that oughtn’t be in jail for child abuse, endangerment, neglect, or all three, so you may as well stan whoever you like really
Here’s the thing, most of the teachers in HP are bad or abusive in almost cartoonish ways. They are so over the top that it doesn’t have much to do with reality. We don’t know someone who would act like Dumbledore, or Lupin as a werewolf. We do know someone who acts like Snape, or could well imagine one.
Particularly with how Snape acts towards Neville.
It’s why the Dursleys or Umbridge are so much more hated than Voldemort- we don’t know a Voldemort. We know a Vernon Dursley.
