I originally had a completely different plot for Legends up until the very last minute. Fistandantilus was going to continue to manipulate Raistlin and turn him against Dalamar, leading to a Legends a lot more like canon.
It was only when this was supposed to actually happen- in the Silvanesti Nightmare, that I realised I hated the whole plot, Raistlin wouldn’t fall for it, and if he did Dalamar would never forgive him and I did want to have a happy ending.
I dithered for a few weeks, not sure where to go with it, and if I remember correctly it was my beta Chetwynd who gave me solution. I’d just read the Kingpriest Trilogy aka Fistandantilus being an absolute magnificent bastard emphasis on the bastard for three books, and having more of that total asshole in the story sounded like the best idea ever- hence going with the possession plot instead.
You can actually see the spot I changed my mind where chapter five of Nocturnale ends with Raistlin doubting Dalamar, and in chapter six he’s suddenly come to his senses, wonders why the hell he’s trusting Fistandantilus, and the plot jumps the tracks to a completely new route.
