“why can’t superheroes be sick?

when i told my brother iron man was my favorite, part of that came from the fact that a man used humor and wit to make light of a situation. he, like me, had a brain all full of ideas. and he, like me, was sick. he had what i had. he had flashbacks, he had anxiety attacks, he couldn’t sleep until a project was done. he had ocd that looked like mine. and yet he still fought it.

and i thought: well, maybe i can.

when bucky barnes comes out with dark eyes and no memory, i think of myself. of how certain words make me fall back into the places i never want to return to. of how i can’t erase everything that’s been taught to me by the people who hurt me, but i’m trying. that love, above everything, helps me ground myself to the present so i’m not sent tumbling. i think of my own actions - all full of risk, of hurting people i genuinely care about - that i don’t control. how not everyone holds him accountable.

and i thought: maybe there’s hope.

but at the end of the movie, we put the sick man back into sleep. he’s too much of a burden on his friends and family. he’s a plot line that needs to be wrapped up neatly. we don’t put him in therapy. we erase him completely. mentally ill people don’t deserve to be treated gently. we are a disaster waiting to happen. we are a war breeding.

at the end of the movie, nobody has helped tony stark. nobody has made sure he gets home safe and doesn’t drink well past dark. he has lost everything, can’t even get his friends to listen. he’s doing his best and still isn’t seen as a victim. his girlfriend is annoyed with him because illness is a burden.

mental illness works as a great shock value. they trot out the idea that they’ll actually represent us, and then they pull out the rug. black widow’s depression and trauma is just discussed to make a man feel safe. the story never touches on how that shapes her every day.

at the end, we are left with empty hands. the message is clear enough. if you are walking with something bad in your brain, you don’t get to be a superhero. you’re too much. you just need to be put to sleep so you stop bothering every one. your illness is a stunt. a character flaw. not serious enough. your lover will become angry with your compulsions. nobody will ask you if you’ve ever gotten over things.

at the end of the movie, tony stark’s friend jerks awake: he missed the whole story. the audience laughs and i find myself ready to start crying. “he was trying to get help,” i say, but can’t hear my voice through the chuckling, “he was trying.”

and i thought: what if nobody really cares that we’re dying?”

FIRST OF ALL, MARVEL, MENTAL ILLNESS SHOULDN’T BE A SIDE-NOTE // r.i.d (via inkskinned)

I hated how the movie treated Bucky almost as much as I hated how it treated Tony.

Civil War: *Has 1/9ths of Wanda and Steve feeling horrible over the 11 people that died*

Fandom: I CANT BELIEVE TEAM CAP IS SO INSENSITIVE TO THE PEOPLE WHO DIED! SOME HEROS!

Now when you see 1/9th do you mean 1/9th of their screen time? Because if so, well I’m respectfully going to have to disagree with you. We get Wanda covering her mouth in horror, and not even two minute of Steve talking to Wanda before they’ve moved on. Steve says something about not being able to save everyone, and that’s true, except he forgot that it could’ve been avoided had he made sure everyone he was bringing on to the field were in control of their abilities, and, correct me if I’m wrong because this could be false as I’m too tired to fact check, had he not been taken off guard by the mention of Bucky. We don’t see a lot of guilt other than that. Hell next thing you know Wanda is up and using her uncontrollable powers again to help what many thought was a terrorist….Gee…I wonder why so many people were scared, and Steve is all “The safest hands are still our own…even if the people want this…or that sometimes we rush blind into a situation and screw up…..or that we want to act like a police force but without the supervision.” Sorry about this rant, I saw the post and couldn’t hold back 😊 You got your opinion I got mine, let’s agree to disagree shall we? 😁 Side note: To any of my followers who would like to check out a blog that supports both Tony and Steve, check out @regaltempo who made the OP

Given that male/female gender is basically window dressing, traditional queer/straight preferences are treated like liking red haired people- a bit weird, but no discrimination.

My general rule with SLR is that it’s slightly more backwards than our world on equivalent gender/sexuality issues (it’s about the same on race). So being queer is only just starting to come into the mainstream. Being queer is more accepted, but it’s a lot harder to get your Bond recognised and there’s a lot of misinformation (see also- Clint being amazed two Omegas can bond).

As for the characters:

Tony- technically Bisexual, but he’s still too uncomfortable around Alphas to want to have sex with them.

Pepper: Straight (into Betas and Omegas)

Rhodey: Gay (likes Alphas and alpha-ish betas)

Steve: Bisexual.

Bruce: Gay/Lesbian (likes Omegas pretty much exclusively)

Thor: Doesn’t have ABO in Asgard so straight in the traditional terms.

Clint: Straight (likes Alphas)

Natasha: Bi/Pansexual (doesn’t care)

Coulson: Straight

I probably mentioned in passing, but Bucky was more then incidentally bisexual, and he and Steve had an almost-thing back in the day. The bots don’t have sexualities so I gueess Jarvis and co are Asexual?

That’s not the case though, I can’t predict any characters actions but considering Steve as a person, but I’m pretty sure he would definitely take her off the field until she would be fit enough to fight again.

Lol wut? Tony took her off the field and kept her safe, Steve convinced her to come out and she ended up escalating the whole airport fight. Nothing in Steve’s behavior suggests he’d bench Wanda if given the choice.
