theres so many things wrong here i want to Scream hollywood is such a fuckjng mess
you all know why lord of the flies was written about little boys? golding very specifically believed that 1) he was not qualified to write about little girls as he had never experienced being one 2) he did not believe that the same events would transpire if it had been girls because he thought boys behaviour more likely to paint a picture of (male dominated) society and its problems. you can’t keep a female version of the story ‘faithful’ to the book because then it would be unfaithful to what the author was originally trying to portray. why dont you go and spit on goldings grave while you’re at it too.
Wasn’t LOTF also written in response to an older book that kind of depicted British boys/men as the golden children of reason and civilization, and Golding, who taught at a boys’ school, was like “lol have you met any actual boys”
This is probably Bad but I’m pretty sure either the same thing or something just as bad but less violent but more mindfucky (like maybe someone would be driven to suicide rather than the homicide?) would happen with girls
I can guarantee that every woman saying that this story doesn’t work with men never went to an all girl’s school. I only had a year and a half at that place but holy fuck, I’ve never since seen such pure unadulterated cruelty. A year and a half as a 11 year old and I still have the occasional nightmare. I mean shit, doesn’t anyone remember that recent story about the Australian girl being set up for rape by girls at her school? Girls are capable of awful things.
Also, my gut response to “women can’t be mean!!!” shit is “I am almost certain you were just like the kids that made my life hell in secondary school”, because all of those girls were super into “the sisterhood” and how girls make better friends than boys and all the rest of it too. They just wanted to make sure I knew I was failing at being a girl and needed to be punished for that.
Both of my abusers were women. This way of thinking is so foreign to me.
whenever i see those “girls are so kind omg while men whistle at my ass girls give me tampons and compliment my hair” I’m like … you were never bullied by girls, were you
bc i got bullied all the way through elementary school and in more sophisticated and underhanded ways in high school and about 90% of that bullying was done by girls, so like, don’t tell me that teenage girls can’t be mean and vicious.
It’s like, you could do a LotF version with girls, but it would be a) very different from the book (not better, necessarily, but different) and b) would need to be done by people with more of a clue than this lot.
