Appreciate the fucking aspec nonbinary representation fuckers
This is beautiful.
I think we need a new term between ‘specific representation’ and ‘queerbaiting’. I like ‘queer friendly’.
Specific representation is when a character or characters are explicitly queer. Jughead in Archie would be a good example of explicit ace rep.
Queerbaiting is when a queer relationship is teased but then decisively shut down, Sherlock is a good example of this.
Queer friendly is somewhere between the two, where in the representation is not made explicit, but is left open for audience interpretation. You can read Good Omens as gay, asexual or platonic love. Similarly, the Granada Sherlock Holmes series is another example of queer friendly media.
I actually do prefer specific representation, if only because it doesn’t allow homophobes any ambiguity. However, queer friendly is by no means bad, and in the case of Neil Gaiman, who does often provide specific representation in his solo books, I’m willing to accept he went with a queer friendly approach because he didn’t feel comfortable rewrite the characters without Terry Pratchett’s go ahead.
