I was a bit depressed because no one seems to be reading I&E any more, and I don't like to think I'm writing for nothing. So I went to see District 9.

Sad thing is that this is more realistic for First Contact with an alien species not powerful enough to obliterate Mankind and capable of digesting an Earth substance that's like crack.

I hope to see the Prawns kick ass in the sequel.

I think it could be a cool hostage crisis (ie, aliens come back and want to blow up earth, but can't because their fellows are held hostage by humans).
The one thing that bothered me was that Christopher didn't take his people with him when he left. I mean, I know it's a more powerful film because of it, but by that point I wouldn't have trusted humanity with half a rock, let alone the lives of 1,000,000+ of my fellow aliens.

I don't think the aliens would necessarily be limited in effect by a mere 1 million hostage aliens on Earth. This isn't the Vietnam-Cambodia War, this is a war between starfarers and a bunch of monkeys that never even managed a large-scale war on a continental scale. Apes gon' get fried.
