What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

The 1987 hurricane, by virtue of, y'know, being in the middle of it. I remember waiting at my window waiting for my mother to come back, she'd gone to drive her sister and nephew to the airport. I remember being scared. I wasn't quite two yet.

I remember it well on account of having to attempt to walk the six miles to work (got half way, phoned in and was told to go home as the school was closed- not so many mobiles about back then) due to my Kawasaki Z750GT (memories :o) being buried under the rubble of the house roofs of the terrace opposite which took off at some point in the night and dumped themselves in the street on on top of several cars and my bike.
