An article on fanfiction by someone with an actual brain. Granted, it's the same people who made Hitler man of the year, so maybe we shouldn't be too quick to celebrate... (no, we will never let you live that down).

"Fanfic writing isn't work, it's joyful play," she says. "The problem is that for most people, any kind of writing looks like work to them, so they get confused why anyone would want to write fanfic instead of original professional material, even though they don't have any problem understanding why someone would want to mess around on a guitar playing Simon and Garfunkel."

So much this.

The only thing is, only briefly touched on any fanfic for profit and also said that it's "not really fanfic". But I disagree. There are all levels of published fanfic just as there are for free on the Internet. Pride and Prejudice specifically has some truly horrendous things, as well as smutty, vampires, and zombies. Fandom may be different, but I don't think that something being recognized as "literary" makes it any less "fanfic".

Just my opinion though. Sorry to creep in here.

The topic of paid fanfic is a bit of a wooly definition, as it's the point where fanfic and original work sort of blurs. Is the Aeneid fanfic? How about Hamlet? Personally I think one of the defining traits of fanfic is that you're not being paid for it.

Maybe not those examples. But what about all those Pride and Prejudice books? Or the Sense and Sensibilty and Sea Monsters type books? How, other than pay, are they any different than many online stories? What about Movies in 15 minutes, which has become published book? I, personally, dont think pay makes any difference. I think it's just another aspect of fandom.
