There was a post on Salon about how the Norwegian bomb attacks are beign reported while other such attacks in other, less white parts of the world go unreported, and on military actions Norway may have undertaken which could have provoked this attack.

It's a fair point.

But seriously, couldn't you have waited a few fucking days before writing something so insensitive? People died today and we're still counting the wounded. Is it too much to ask for a day or two's respite? It come across as pretty nasty bastardry to point out this sort of stuff less that 24 hours after it happened.

This is the kind of bullshit that drives me--a 3rd generation left-winger--away from the left wing. I am so sick of political correctness. Just the other day I was on wtf_nature here and some idiots their panties in a bunch because the BBC referred to a rare butterfly with the genitalia of both sexes as he/she. I and others were like, wtf, can't we just ooh and ahh over the pretty butterfly? But no, because using that language is derogative to transgender people. IT'S A F***ING BUTTERFLY!!!!

I see the point of political correctness, but this is nothing of the sort. The points are good and if they'd come a month after the event I'd find it interesting and poignant. Unfortunately it isn't, and this is just hurtful.

Where I find a problem with poltical correctness is when it springs up in inappropriate circumstances, like this. As you say, the point is very valid indeed, but at the very least they could wait until the initial pain and shock of the event has passed before making it. Making the point right away only creates further pain, and it doesn't further the cause.

As soon as I saw the news, I knew some Idiots On The Internet were probably just wetting their pants over the prospect of being the first to wring their share of Timely!Wank! from the murders.

I'm surprised that Salon would allow that sort of nastiness, though.

Also: I can't think of another event recently where one man killed so many people using a gun.

[If we look at the coverage of the bomb blast in Oslo, that was actually about at the same level as the bomb blasts in various parts of the world last week. ie business as usual.]

I'm pretty much resigned to people being shitty when something terrible happens. :( Wherever there's tragedy, SOMEBODY is going to step on the back of it to make a point. It's like, a fundamental law of the universe or something.
