I'm currently unemployed, today, I was walking through my local area and saw a 'staff required' sign in the window of a kebab shop. I went in to ask about it, and was told 'We don't hire women'. I was stunned, tried to find out why, was rebuffed again, told them 'Glad to know you're rolling you your patties with your penis', and left. I came back later to get more info, and was ordered to get out of the store when I asked for the address. I told the same guy he was breaking the law by refusing to hire women, he told me he got a lot of Islamic customers, and didn't want to offend them by hiring women. I then demanded to speak to the manager. He told me he was the manager.

Who do I go to in order to report these people? Would suing them be an option?

Counsel of perfection: Get it in writing if you can. Depending on how brave you feel get a friend to go with you to the shop as witness. If you don't leave the shop they have the alternative of trying to make you (assault with a witness, preferably with camera phone) or calling the Police - when you can explain what you wanted to know and they should be in trouble.

Illegal. Full Stop.

Technically you could sue, might have some problem getting legal aid, might find a pro bono but it's very small fish.

Reality checkpoint: Talk to the CAB. I'd also shop them to the local papers , but watch that they don't put some nasty racist spin on it, I assume you wouldn't want to be associated with that.
