It's nice to have some good news

So, amidst all the fuss and bother of having the goverment dismantle everything that made England fun to live in, there is a flash of good news coming from the South Seas. The Japanese Whale Hunt has been suspended
One of my earliest memories is of being given a bath by my grandmother. I must have been about 3. I was playing with a little toy whale, bright red hollow plastic, and I remember my grandmother telling me that for a while everyone thought the whales would die, because they were being hunted so much. But it was alright now, because it had been made illegal and the whales were going to be ok. This made me very happy. I would have been around 1988 or 1989, only a few years after the International Ban of Whaling was established.
So please understand that when people from Norway/Iceland/Japan tell me it's cultural tradition for them to hunt whales, I feel like saying 'Yeah? Well it's a cultural tradition for people of French descent to invade other countries and enslave their populations, so that can fuck right off thank you." Hunting anything because it's a cultural tradition is balls, including fox hunting, which at least has the option of being fun for the hunters, while whaling is just depressing all round: Sailing through sub-zero seas to kill a completely harmless and possibly sentient creature in order to ship the meat back to a country where half of it rots and the other half is fed to children who don't like it is just all around fail.
And while I don't always see eye to eye with environmental activists (a lot of their goals are just plain not going to happen bar a return to the stone age) I rather like Sea Shepherd and give them a hearty round of applause for their dedication and hard work, which has finally paid off.
*salutes*
