ooI just watched 'My Summer of Love' and am feeling just downright pissed.

Firstly, and most loudly. CAN WE STOP WITH THE FUCKING PSYCHO GAY PEOPLE ALREADY!!!!!!!

Holy shit people! This isn't the fucking 1950s! We're supposed to have grown up a bit since then and realised that being gay is not actually a mental illness!

If it was just that film, I wouldn't have minded. It was okay as a film, if disjoined and the acting was pretty bad. It had great use of colour and interesting relationships otherwise. But no, you look at all the films out nowdays, and all the gay characters are either mad or unhappy (the last is in deference to Brokeback Mountain more than anything else). Posidon- The guy was threatening suicide.  Little Miss Sunshine- The guy actually tried to commit suicide. I could go on, but fuck, my blood pressure's high enough as it is. What is the media saying here? Being gay is bad and you die sad and unhappy and alone! (because nothing actually gets better for any of these characters) Right. Please line up the directors, because I have a sharp katana which has a date with their balls (or lack of them).

Oh yes, and while you're at it, line up the leaders of the religious reich, because I'd like to castrate them too while I'm at it.

Sorry, that was very little about the film, but I needed to rant.

I agree with you. I would like to see movies/shows with gay people acting very natural and healthy, and people trrating them normally, as if thier sexuality was not an issue at all. I think this is what really is needed to help normalize society's view of alternative lifestyles.

Well, to be fair not many people do, and homophobia's a real problem. I'd like a film where two guys (or girls, 'Summer of Love' was a lesbian film) fall madly in love and live happily ever after despite the hatred that surrounds them. It's daft, they've done that formula a billion times with straight couples, and now when sociaty has handed them a nice twist, they fuck it up.

Maybe. I don't want to defend them. Honestly, I've got no idea what the producers/scrptwriters are thinking. (Haven't watched most of the movies either.)

I totally agree with you on this . . . Same happens in yaoi/yuri. It's usually never a happy ending or they have to add something gross to make me squick.

Yep, I have yet to watch a yaoi where one of the following doesn't happen:

1. Rape
2. Incest
3. Character Death (one of the people in the main couple)

And have yet to see one with a genuine happy ending . . .

Shonen-ai (boy's love; milder than yaoi)is a little better, but there are no blatant sex scenes. You're lucky if you see kissing and maybe mild sexually suggestive acts. Most just have relationships merely hinted at except for a few. :^|

I haven't even been able to watch any good yuri yet . . . it seems a lot harder to find, but according to the list over at the Shoujo-Ai (girl's love) Archive, it's all the same crap. :^| What the hell? Ah, well. Plus from what I've seen of shoujo-ai, they're all too girly-girl for my tastes. Bleh. Even some of the shonen-ai is too girly-girl for me if that makes any sense . . . There was one I was watching on YouTube where boys had to dress up like girls. I mean, not that I hate crossdressing, but please. In anime, it's hard to tell what sex someone is as it is most of the time. :^P I forgot what it's called . . . Ah, well. It's not worth it anyways, trust me.

One I recommend is Zetsuai and Bronze. There's a bit of a non-consensual relationship (at least at first), but it's not as terrible as the rest of them. And it's obvious they're both guys. *LOL!* The ending isn't too bad, either. Well, compared to others I've seen. :^|

I'm not too big a fan of manga . . . I'm a big fan of Battle Angel, but that's about it. I'm just too tempted to color it in. *LOL!!!*

Plus, I think their censorship rules are freakin' stupid: in anime and manga . . . *sighs.* Whatever.

I would love to see a manga where it's two samurai falling in love, that would seriously sexy, not to mention realistic. ;D

I don't like non-con, which is annoying when it comes to manga, and I really don't like that sort of 'hate turns to love' (the main reason I can't stand Harry/Draco slash).

Yeah, that put me off too. I don't like it either. Not a fan of Harry/Draco or Snarry either because of that . . .

X-men . . . ah, I remember the days when I bought every comic. (I still have a moderate-sized box full of X-men and other comics.) I haven't read any of their series in a long time. So . . . Ultimate? Fill me in! *LOL!*

The only slashy-sorta thing was a femmeslash possibility between Storm and Yukio from one comic . . . I thought that was pretty hot, because Storm's always been my favorite female character from X-Men. And even though I love Halle Berry, she doesn't fit my image of her in the movies. Too short for one thing. :^|

Ultimate... well, to paraphrase Penknife, who writes the best X men slash fics ever: 'Magneto's relationship with Charles goes beyond slashy to "makes zero sense as a platonic friendship."'

I agree. I wish they didn't make him a whacked-out nut job, even worse than the original, but I have no idea how we were meant to percieve their relationship, because I had an eyebrow raised all the way through the flashbacks- "Right, so Professor X leaves his wife and kid and goes off with Magneto, who he's been spending all his time with anyway. What am I supposed to think here?"

The movies were what started me on the comics, but yeah, Storm was awful there.

Magneto and Charles relationship? Never really thought that as slashy . . . but then again, I really didn't think of any man x man slash at the time I was reading X-Men. Was more a woman x woman fan at the time. ;^)

Yeah, she sure as hell was . . . Ah, well. I always pictured someone like Iman playing her . . . Patrick Stewart as Professor X is perfect, however. :^D

After the third film it whacked me upside the head, but since you haven't seen it, don't. The film's rubbish. The second one was good though.

Patrick Steward rocks :) He's going to be in London next year, they're putting on 'The Tempest' at one of the West End theaters and he's playing Prospero. I am so there.

Samurai... Yes, I believe I'd read that, too. I generally don't like manga-style much and hardly read any (though many of my friends do) -those scary, oversized eyes somehow remind me of the old Marilyn Manson viedeo from "Drugs".
And the guys/girls interchangeableness is really annoying (not because of the looks, I like pretty boys, I really do (why else would I like elves? *g*), but because the characters have all the typical girly traits that even grate my nerve in real girls).
But warriors in love... (*squees*)

In comics I like the style a bit better, but usually the super-hero complexes make me shake my head.
When I was 9 or 10, I was pretty fond of those age-old "Prince Valiant" comics (well, illustrated novels rather; the series is very famous as "Prinz Eisenherz" in Germany, there were also a TV-series and several movies), that my dad let me keep when I found them on the attic. (I have them still. *cough*) The guy is rather Mary-Sue-ish and has the world's most awful haircut, but hey, it's got swords, knights, horses (reasons for me to love it) and SUBTEXT. And the author was supiciously fond of drawing half-naked men... *g* (I only wonder why it was originally supposed to be read by boys.)

I haven't read many mangas (usually, the first few pages are enough to tell me I won't like it, especially if it's all about 'normal' school-girls in -uck!- school-uniforms) and my friends have pretty much given up on me. I've never seen the appeal of naive-to-the-point-of-stupidity main characters. *shudders*
One that's quite nice (though I'd still prefer it in book-form), once you've gotten used to the very soft style (at least the eyes aren't /that/ big) and weird clothes, is "Cantarella", about the Italian Renaissance, starring the infamous Borgia family. It is historical fantasy rather than historical fiction and almost dark enough to like. Its main plus is that it has a villain and his favourite asassin for main characters -though I guess the real people were a hundred times more evil and far less pretty, but hey. Some things were well-researched, others are a bit dubious. And the main female character is just naive cliche again. Anyway, it's rather the only manga I've more or less liked, though I don't think I'd read it if I couldn't borrow it from anyone.

If you ask me: I stick to books anytime.

About the non-con thing: I sometimes like it, but only if it's done properly and the characters don't suddenly and senselessly fall in love.
But no objection to some decent hate-sex... *g*
