I don't know how many here have heard (or heard of) Queens of the Stone Age, but all I can say, those who don't know what I'm talking about, educate yourselves. They are one of the best bands I have heard for a very long time. Of course, I'm being biased because the reason I like them so much is because they correspond perfectly to my rather morbid, twisted mood at the moment (a mixture of bad luck and holocaust litrature, I'm afraid), but even so, based purely on skill they are wonderful.
They have three albums out at the moment, and it's notable that it's taken them at least two years to produce each one. The first is 'Rated R', which is okay there are some absolutely great tracks on it, though- 'Monsters in the Parasol' is completely random and warped, 'Autopilot' is the kind of song you'd want to get stoned on, and 'Better Living Through Chemistry' is just all-out amazing. I've listened to 'Lost Art of Keeping a Secret' and 'Leg of Lamb' a few too many times to appreciate them fairly, but they are great tracks all the same.
The second album, and the one I'd really reccomend, is 'Songs for the Deaf', it runs the gamut from the bizarre to the nigh undescribable ('Mosquito Song' is an example of the latter), but the vast majority of it is very catchy and enjoyable; tracks 8-10 have some of the best beginnings of any song I've ever heard, and 'Sky is Falling' has amazing vocals.
The third- which is the one I'm listening to- is in my mind the best, although it's an aquired taste. It has some very strange songs ('Everyone Knows that You're Insane' and 'Burn the Witch') but wow. They might have lost one of their guitarists, but if anything, I like their stuff even more. My personal favourites are 'I Never Came' (wonderful lyrics and guitar solos I just adore), 'Someone's In the Wolf' (more heavy metal, but electric and with the band's trademark minimal lyrics), 'Long Slow Goodbye' (I am so writing a slash scene to that in future), and 'Burn the Witch' (almost chanted, with very little instuments, and a beat that drills mercilessly into your head)
So yes, this is what I do when I can't sleep at 1am, but come on, I love this band.
