I mean, it started off as pretty good deconstructions of the flaws in Whedon's writing (particularly the rather skeevy Dollhouse) but now their articles have gone straight into hatedom outright bashing with the last two podcasts on Cabin in the Woods and Avengers, both of which contained so much projection you could probably use the contributors for powerpoint presentations.

It's a bit annoying, I really liked Ferretbrain, but this isn't a road I want to see the site go down. While I certainly don't believe that any film is above or below criticism, there's a point where you have to draw the line because the assumptions you're making and actions you're projecting onto the film and its makers just isn't supported (ie, the idea that Cabin in the Woods was Whedon ranting against horror movie audiences, rather than a hilarious commentary on the tropes of modern horror movies).

It's also rather fascinating, in a depressing way, just how hard they're projecting. The image of critical superiority they're attributing to Whedon could be far more accurately directed (as we have no idea what Whedon was thinking when he made these films) at the Ferretbrain crew themselves.

I'm looking at the comments for the "Cabin In The Woods" and "Avengers" ones now. Apparently they criticise Whedon for re-using actors. Do they know how many directors they are dissing with that? They'd need to raise the same criticism on Tim Burton (meh, I'm no fan, but my problem is more that Depp could spend that time in really GOOD movies instead), Joe Dante (grrr! No hating on him dammit! The more Dick Miller the better!), Quentin Tarantino (keeps using Sam L Jackson *gasp!*), Robert Rodriguez (keeps on using Danny Trejo and, more recently, Bruce Willis - what a shocker!), The first three Danny Boyle movies kept using Ewan McGregor, horror directors in general keep giving Tom Savini roles in their movies too!

There's nothing wrong with a director giving work to actors they enjoy working with. If the actors WANT to keep working with the director it's a good sign that the director is good at managing people. I don't understand what their problem is supposed to be.

Interestingly though, while I disagree with some of the points they make about Black Widow in that post, I had no idea when the ",,,,, has been compromised" line is said that "Barton" was Hawkeye's name. I presumed that Coulson was naming the massive SHIELD base that had just collapsed in on itself.

Is there a Ferretbrain podcast that I SHOULD listen to, because I'm not particularly keen on checking out ones which annoyed you. Particularly not if they are going to spend the podcast specifically bashing my favourite movie of the year so far, Cabin In The Woods.

To be honest I haven't found any that were that good. I enjoyed the Mass Effect one, if only because it was nice to hear other people commiserating over the dreadful ending. Some articles are good, and as a whole they're generally ok, but they seem to have this ferret up their arse about Joss Whedon.
