Also, if someone deliberately put in the subtext of viewing the Holocaust as the means by which a Bad Old World (Diaspora Judaism) gave way to a Good New World (Israel), instead of it being an Unfortunate Implication of spectacular scale, then that person deserves to be repeatedly shot in the groin.

You;ve pretty much summed up my problem with Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union.

Not sure of the connection here.

The point of the Yiddish Policemen's Union is that the Holocaust didn't happen because the European Jewish community managed to leg it to Alaska. It's an exploration of the strains between Diaspora Judaism and Israel in a world in which the Holocaust didn't happen.

But it's basic message was "and we wouldn't have got Israel". I found it very hard to stomach.

I'm not sure if it portrays the lack of Israel as a bad thing. And anyway, doesn't it end with a push to start the founding of Israel? I saw it as more of an exploration of the clash between diaspora Jewry and Israel without the Holocaust's fait accompli, but not really favouring one over the other. If anything I got a negative vibe towards the Israel crowd.
