Now, it's a bit early to speculate, but might it just be possible that the first three X-men films are going to be presented as a dystopian future the cast of First Class desperately have to stop at all costs?

Because that would be eighteen kinds of awesome, right there.

Oh wait, the third film... Definitely something the cast of First Class desperately have to stop at all costs.
I hope that the writers don't pull the tired old trick of the X-men's intervention causing the very dystopia that they aimed to avoid. The only problem with idle speculation is that your theory is probably better than the end result.
(Thank you for reminding me that I haven't seen the fourth film: it is worth seeing even if I found Wolverine to be one of the least-interesting characters in the first three?)

Wow.

That would be so FRICKEN awesome. Does someone from the first three come back to warn them?

That's the set up of Days of Future Past. In the comics, the world of the X-men becomes this dystopian future in which just about everyone is dead, and Magneto is running a resistance force of the last mutants. In a desperate last ploy, they send one of their number (Kitty Pride I believe, but it might be Cable) back in time to prevent the mutant genocide. There's this key event (I think the assasination of an anti-mutant senator by Magneto but don't quote me on this) they have to prevent.

Now, I don't know much about this, but I do know we are going to have James Macavoy, Micheal Fassbender, Patrick Steward and Sir Ian McKellan in the same film, which is already awesome. However, I think that Patrick Stweard and Ian McKellan are going to be the Xavier and Magneto from the future, and Macavoy and Fassbender those from the past. As Steward and McKellan are both from the original X-men films, it might MIGHT (and holy fuck it should) be the case that this dystopian future will be the one from the first few films (perhaps a few years after X3).

This would allow the new X-men film series to progress without worrying about continuity issues, and those of us who hated X-3 to happily dance on it's fucking grave.

I remember a similar plot arc from the cartoon, with Bishop? Although Cable did a bit of time travelling too, I think.

I saw that also Hugh Jackman was on the imdb credits. I hope he's more than a tiny cameo in this one!

I'm already shivering with anticipation.

Somehow, I don't see them treating the first three movies as a dystopian future which has to be prevented (much as I'd like to dismiss X-3). But hey, if they did it with Star Trek, I guess it's possible. (Though if they have Stewart playing Future Professor X, they're not keeping in strict continuity with X3 anyway. Not that I blame them.)

Still, with a cast list like that, this film has got to be good, regardless of its position towards the other movies.

(And yes, it was Kitty Pryde they sent back in the comic, to prevent Mystique from assassinating an anti-mutant senator.)
