It was the first time they had a child this small.

Herc knows this rates him as possibly the worst father in the world- and Chuck would no doubt take the opportunity to remind him- but he had not really been around when his son was small. He’d been deployed for most of it, and when he had come back he hadn’t… known what to do with the small, solemn faced toddler who screamed at the sight of this stranger. It had felt easier not to try- and he had been paying for that decision ever since.

Not this time. He’d looked at the small, sleeping bundle in Stacker’s arms and known he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. He’d be there, even if it was uncharted water for both of them. Even if he thought he was doing more harm with his presence. Chuck hadn’t been home since the Breach closed.

Jake is starting to crawl now, small starfish hands splaying on the carpet as he romps over to Herc. He puts both hands on Herc’s leg and looks up at him, wide dark eyes curious. Herc smiles. “Hey little guy.”

Jake smiles, burbles. Herc picks him up and tucks him against his chest. He’s warm, and surprisingly heavy for such a small guy. Had he ever picked Chuck up like that? He can’t remember.

Herc sometimes wishes he could go back in time and punch the idiot he had been.

Jake squirms in his arms, making grabbing motions towards his favourite stuffed toy. Herc sighs. He’s never going to forgive Doctor Geiszler for making it, but it’s Jake favourite and there’s not throwing it out now. He’s just going to have to live with his son cuddling a perfectly detailed plushie of Leatherback.

He gives it to Jake. Jake smiles and dribbles over the Kaiju’s face. “Did I tell you how we fought that one?” He says softly, “Me, and your big brother Chuck? We were in Striker- that one over there, although you don’t play with it-”

Jake chews on one Kaiju’s paw, and Herc can’t help but smile. “Yeah, we could have used a giant baby to help us. Are you teething, little guy?” Another burble, prompting him to continue.

“Anyway, it was raining, rotten weather for fighting. Just a day before the war ended-”

Stacker poked his head in when he came home, and saw his husband sitting surrounded by toys, Jake fast asleep in his arms as he talked, voice nearly hoarse.
