Taika Waititi: Now, for my next trick, after depicting Adolf Hitler as a native new Zealander, I will tackle the true source of horror in the modern world.

Taika Waititi: What the fuck happened to that kid at the end of Time Bandits?

Just… is this wise? Do you know the power you are about the wield? This risks exposing a new generation to Time Bandits. This may just break us all.

If you don’t know Time Bandits… I have no idea where to start. Take Return to Oz. It’s scarier. Take Dark Crystal. It’s weirder. Take Watership Down. It’s more traumatic. It’s the absolute pinnacle of the 1980′s ‘It’s for kids!’ brainscar that had us crying behind the sofa in a fetal position.

The only thing that saved us is that it was so niche and so fucking out there that it’s exposure to the general population was minimum. To illustrate what the hell we’re dealing with here, to illustrate:

This is god:

This is the devil:

This is… I have legitimately blanked out what the fuck was going on here:

I’m not going to spoil the ending but WTF WTF WTF.

Oh yeah and because this makes it sound like a bad idea, watch Time Bandits. There is absolutely nothing like it anywhere. Terry Gilliam mastered something so eldritch and arcane here that it makes my brain hurt. Watch it.

What the hell is Taika going to do with this?

My school routinely showed this (or journey to the sea, or that thing where the kid loses the balon) when they needed to store us all in the auditorium because a thing was going on requiring most of the teachers.  Plus my family watched it o TV when it was randomly on like anything Monty Python or Python adjacent.

I’m pretty sure I watched this 3-5 times a year, year after year after year during a formative period of my life.

Which likely explains some things.

Next you’ll be telling kids to figure out what the hell Brazil was even about!

…wait

you’re telling me this shit was real and not some fever dream I had when I was 6 with the chickenpox, double ear infection and a case of poison oak all while being severely dehydrated from throwing up?

……………………….

I legitimately though I’d imagined that movie becuase I had NO idea what the name of it was and could never describe it well enough to anyone to pin down what it was outside of some fucked up shit my mind had concocted while fighting the plague.

what the actual fuck

I LOVED IT- to this day I’m always on the lookout for a black doorway to slice open through the air before me. I’d jump through that thing in a heartbeat. I’m fuckin serious y’all!

I’d say y’all need Jesus but I’m pretty sure he’d refused to go anywhere near this.

I have … a tip.

If you’re writing something that involves an aspect of life that you have not experienced, you obviously have to do research on it. You have to find other examples of it in order to accurately incorporate it into your story realistically.

But don’t just look at professional write ups. Don’t stop at wikepedia or webMD. Look up first person accounts.

I wrote a fic once where a character has frequent seizures. Naturally, I was all over the wikipedia page for seizures, the related pages, other medical websites, etc.

But I also looked at Yahoo asks where people where asking more obscure questions, sometimes asked by people who were experiencing seizures, sometimes answered by people who have had seizures.

I looked to YouTube. Found a few individual videos of people detailing how their seizures usually played out. So found a few channels that were mostly dedicated to displaying the daily habits of someone who was epileptic.

I looked at blogs and articles written by people who have had seizures regularly for as long as they can remember. But I also read the frantic posts from people who were newly diagnosed or had only had one and were worried about another.

When I wrote that fic, I got a comment from someone saying that I had touched upon aspects of movement disorders that they had never seen portrayed in media and that they had found representation in my art that they just never had before. And I think it’s because of the details. The little things.

The wiki page for seizures tells you the technicalities of it all, the terminology. It tells you what can cause them and what the symptoms are. It tells you how to deal with them, how to prevent them.

But it doesn’t tell you how some people with seizures are wary of holding sharp objects or hot liquids. It doesn’t tell you how epileptics feel when they’ve just found out that they’re prone to fits. It doesn’t tell you how their friends and family react to the news.

This applies to any and all writing. And any and all subjects. Disabilities. Sexualities. Ethnicities. Cultures. Professions. Hobbies. Traumas. If you haven’t experienced something first hand, talk to people that have. Listen to people that have. Don’t stop at the scholarly sources. They don’t always have all that you need.

I … LOVE reading the replies and tags for this post! I’m happy that, out of all my posts, this is the one that’s blown up so quickly.

I love the people who are a part of a minority, that are gushing about their favorite fics or books that seem to have done this and offer proper representation.

I love the people who are bringing up the toxic mindset that is very popular on tumblr, the “you can’t write about it if you haven’t lived it” ideology that makes writers feel guilty for providing representation.

I especially love the people who are mentioning how they should start doing this. I love the people who are probably young or inexperienced writers that are seeing this and thinking of doing this for the first time. I love that there are people who read this and then think to better their writing because of it.

This right here is why all the fics I write incorporate at least three of my own (two dozen) disabilities, particularly epilepsy and ADHD but especially autism. Because I read way too many author notes saying they didn’t do much research. I would rather writers consult disabled folks because most of the time, disability is couched in the language of sterile professional bias from abled neurotypical views, best examples being high and low functioning and person first language.

Part of ableism, a part that people tend to not realize, is complacency in social convention. I say I am an autistic person, I do not want to be call a person with autism (or has, or suffers from, or lives with). Another autistic might want to apply person first and functioning labels, and I might see that as internalized ableism.

Heck, at this point, I would use identity first language for cerebral palsy. In one of my support groups, we call ourselves Ceeps.

Point is, disability research includes personal anecdotes.

I still do it just to ask other epileptics detailed questions about seizures I’ve had that I could give my characters.

I’d like to go on a bit of a tangent here: As important as this is for writing and media (and it is, oh so important, representation matters)? It’s even more important in real life.

Every single one of my mental illnesses, disabilities, and neurodivergences was missed by professionals and authorities - people who knew the clinical shit inside and out - for years.

Every step I’ve made toward figuring myself out and managing my shit - every single one - has started with someone’s firsthand experiences resonating with me. Several of the big ones were because I was researching how to help a friend.

Seek lived experiences. Share lived experiences. It’s so, so important.

When writing OCD characters I’ve relied more on the one afternoon a lady asked me to spot for her in the swimming pool than most medical write ups.

If we’d made it in the 60s it would have been Peter Sellers in both roles. 1970s Michael Palin as Aziraphale and David Bowie as Crowley. In the 1980s still Michael Palin as Aziraphale but now Rowan Atkinson as Crowley. In the 1990s Hugh Grant as Aziraphale and Alan Rickman as Crowley.

So according to an interview with Neil Gaiman in the back of Good Omens, before Terry Pratchett became a full time writer he wrote at least 400 words a day.

I’ve been trying it out for a couple weeks now and let me tell you 400 words is a totally awesome goal. It is very approachable and not intimidating, often leads to more than 400 words cause well now I have to finish this scene.

Seriously I probably would have written nothing in the last couple weeks, instead I’ve written 1000′s of words.

10/10 would recommend.

Terry would be proud.

This mindset also works for other things! Go to the gym with a plan to do the absolute minimum- five minutes run, three sets on the rowing machine- and by the time you’ve done those your mind goes ‘well, I don’t have to do any more, but now I’m here…’

Pedophiles should burn because they are a danger to children, whats the issue?

Because not all pedophiles actually do anything to children, and burning them won’t solve the issue of child abuse. What’s… What’s the issue with burning people alive? When you can see they call anyone they dislike a pedophile? I’m…

“Not all pedos” okay so you support pedophiles, you’re defending people who molest and rape kids? You’re fucking sick.

What part of “not all pedophiles rape and molest kids and those ones shouldn’t be punished for not doing anything” sounds like “I support people who rape and molest kids” to you? Really wondering how that computes.

Pedophiles are pedophiles and they should all be shot on sight, if it hasn’t harmed a kid yet it will.

You really think i would show any empathy to a group of people who get off to the thought of raping kids?

No. Most pedophiles don’t offend. They didn’t choose their attraction and are capable of seeing why it is wrong. Not all child molesters are even pedophiles. Some do it for the power.

If they haven’t harmed anyone, you should show them empathy. If they have harmed someone, you should imprison them and leave it at that. Violence solves nothing.

Also none of the people in the receipts are actually child molesters.

Dehumanizing anyone by calling them “it” is also a big, big yikes

Well pedophiles aren’t people sooo

Ding dong you are wrong! No matter how much you may hate ‘em, they’re still a human!

If you tested Adolf Hitler’s DNA it would come back 100% human. Even the most evil people are human. That’s the whole point. It’s not just some select subhuman group. Anyone can commit evil acts.

Here’s a helpful idea. There are treatment and aid available for pedophiles which keeps them from hurting kids. If your argument is to kill pedophiles on sight, how many are going to risk getting help? How is having those people wandering around, untreated and unrecorded, going to help kids?

yeah, but there’s a few problems with that

- if the premise is that any exposure to sexual content will scar kids for life, then why aren’t we focusing on, like, floor-to-ceiling victoria’s secret ads at public shopping malls instead of “what if a child saw *shudder* a gay man in a dog collar”

- why would a kid who doesn’t know what sex is yet automatically associate a leash or a mask with sex

- a lot of those posts assume a level of explicit sexual interaction is happening at pride events that seems to be more based in stereotypes about ~disgustingly hypersexual gays~ than in anything that’s going on in the real world (the one pride I’ve been to reminded me more of, like….a particularly spirited farmer’s market)

- as a kid, I remember encountering a pretty fair amount of sexual, and even kinky, content–like those victoria’s secret ads, or any Sexy Lady character in kids’ cartoons, or that one sherlock holmes movie where he gets nonconsensually stripped and tied to a bed but it’s done by a woman so it’s played for laughs. As long as it was straight content, no one cared. So hearing “gay sexuality, specifically, is too disgusting and potentially scarring for you to even be allowed to know that gay people exist” didn’t make kid-me feel protected or safe. it was just one of my first encounters with Home of Phobia

In the Netherlands, abortion is legal. There is however one pro life organization called Stichting Schreeuw Om Leven. But instead of harrassing women who are on their way to the abortion clinic and make them feel miserable, they offer them HELP.

If a woman wants to get an abortion because she is financially unable to give birth to and raise a baby, the organization will pay for everything she needs during the pregnancy and after, until she’s financially stable to raise the baby on her own.

This organization won’t stop women from going to the abortion clinic, but would rather hve a healthy conversation with them. Ask them if they can help her with anything in order for them to keep the baby. They also hand out contraception in the streets for those who can’t afford it.

Women don’t get abortions just because they want to. There are reasons why. This organization doesn’t fight abortion, it fights the reasons why women get abortions. Take notes America.

America doesn’t WANT to take notes. Anti-abortion in America isn’t about actually preventing abortions it’s about controlling women. That’s it. That’s all it is.

On their website: Buitenlandse moslima had abortus bij 20 weken. Ze was bang voor haar leven. We hadden meerdere dagen contact met haar na een ontmoeting vóór een abortuscentrum. Doodsbang was ze. Maandagavond zat ze weer in de trein naar huis, opnieuw alleen. We hadden weer contact. Ze was moe, emotioneel en lichamelijk leeg. Volledig stuk. Ja ze was nu wel veilig, maar tegen welke prijs? Ze vertelde dat de arts haar de echo niet had laten zien, omdat het voor haar dan nog moeilijker zou zijn.

Short translation: a Muslim girl who was 20 weeks along commit abortion because it was a (cultural) threat to her life. They had contacted her (more than once) after their meeting IN FRONT of the abortion clinic. She was exhausted and emotional after she took the abortion but she was safe now, but at what costs

Yes that is on their website.

Short translation: the GUY who directs the organisation, Kees debated with a parlement member about their plan of putting his van in front of abortion clinics.

This is a Christian organisation and maybe they don’t stand outside shaming the women, but they stand outside…. Shaming the women on their website with the stories that make people afraid and emphasising they’re killing babies.

I have not found anything about financial aid, only pro life marches. Which is odd because… Why would you not have that on your website? Where are the help plans, financial support??

Guys, don’t celebrate the thin end of the wedge just because it’s ‘not as bad’ . Bitch this is how it starts. Kick those fuckers to the curb.

The answer is 1, why is everyone a delinquent?

Y'all please, learn your pemdas (or bodmas or whatever you learned it as)

It’s 16

*sigh*

Parentheses equation is 2+2, which is 4.

Now we multiply by 2 to get 4x2 which is 8

8 DIVIDED BY 8 is 1.

I have no fucking clue how you can get 16 out of this. I don’t think you’re bad at math, I think you just need glasses.

It’s 1.

It’s 16.

8 / 2 * (2+2) =

8/2 * (4) =

4*4 = 16

You do the parentheses, then you go left to right.

That isn’t how this works…..

PEMDAS

8/2*(2+2) (P = Parentheses)

8/2*(4) (M = Multiply)

8/8=1 (D = Division)

[profile] kingoftartesoss

Use Mathpapa calculator if you still don’t believe me.

No, Riley.

M isn’t in the original problem but 8÷2 still needs a resolution. You have to solve 8÷2 as-is after (2+2) no matter what.

So you’re not following PEMDAS by factoring x4 into 8÷2.

It’s literally this simple.

I, uh, I think it’s 1, actually.

Plug it into a searchbar, or a scientific calculator that waits until the whole thing is input & that’s the answer.

1

No need.

Everyone on this post:

This is something I’ve learnt the hard way. (Please excuse me if I have written something wrong, English is not my mother language)

1. Your phone calculator is not scientific. It’s for basic operations, what you need is a real scientific calculator like the one in my image.

2. PEMDAS IS PEMDAS, Math never changes.

I’m literally getting a headache people are so stupid it’s 1, this person is right PEMDAS is PEMDAS and the answer is 1

Nah it’s 16

im pretty sure that’s not right key

I mean if you can show me why sure but my professor and I are pretty sure this is correct

This is wholesome content! Gods and Ancestors bless this post!

The only way it would equal sixteen is if there were parenthesis around eight divided by two. Since there isn’t, the answer is one.

Reasonable person: I’m getting treatment for my mental illness because I hate what it has done to my life

Some cunt on tumblr: sounds ableist :/

Cause it is ….

If you’re privileged enough to get treatment shut the fuck up about it or use your privilege to fund other people …

Also recovery as a concept is ableist ?? You can’t fully recover and expecting people to is horse shit

[Bad username or unknown identity: antis-delete-your-blogs-pls-thx] thoughts

Recovery is possible in most cases. It’s hard, it’s going to make you want to scream for hours and tear out your own hair sometimes, it’s not going to ever go easy on you, but it is possible. Money and privilege are huge factors in the accessibility of tools for recovery, but even if you cannot afford a single tool, dwelling in your own suffering and insisting it’s ableist not to is not helpful to you or to other disabled folks.

Full recovery depends on your definition of recovery. You’re not going to forget the experiences that you suffered through. You’re not going to be the same person again. But nobody is. How long do your symptoms have to be in remission before you’re recovered fully? Forever? Not even neurotypical people are mentally in a good state for their entire lives. Finding happiness again is possible, recovered or unrecovered.

It’s a similar crab bucket mentality that incels have, they can’t bear seeing people getting better and improving themselves, because if they do, they’ll realise what a shitshow the community is.

the russian LGBT community is in deep shit right now.

a russian LGBT rights activist elena grigoryeva was recently found dead with 8 stab wounds near her home.

the police didn’t do anything about it, despite how many people called out for help.

there’s also a russian anti LGBT group called “pila” (“chainsaw”). a couple of months prior they published a hit list of LGBT activists from russia. elena was on the list. and so are other people who are related to the community in some ways.

they stated that they prepared some “cruel gifts” to the people on the list. the beauty blogger andrew petrov (whose name is also on it) recently made a post for his followers that shed more light on the situation.

another activist, andrew shituhin is a victim of this organization. the addresses of his family, along with other personal information got published on the website. earlier he got kicked out of his university. he immigrated to netherlands, although recently he came to a town near moskow to live for a bit. his friend, zhenia svetski, is aimed at by this organization. in a threatening email “pila” stated that he will be killed before august if andrew doesn’t help him to immigrate to netherlands.

all i’m asking for is to spread this post so that more people from other countries are aware of the situation.

also, i’m encouraging russian folks to add more information to this post in case if i missed anything. thank you.

update: holy shit, this post really blew up. thank you all so much for spreading it.
