actually the worst demographic on this site isn’t kinnies or smug anime girl icon reactionaries it’s those fandom moms who unironically post shit like “if you rugrats try to tell me i don’t belong in fandom spaces then prepare to get rekt little fetus. i was here long before you and my taxes are a bigger emotional threat to me than some whiny infant XD” like ma'am you are 30 years old

hey op can you maybe not pretend that older women act this way entirely unprovoked and instead bc a lot of younger folks have this entitled attitude about fandom spaces where they unironically tell 30+ year olds that they’re gross for enjoying fandom and should leave when those spaces that they think “”“belong”“” to them wouldn’t actually exist without those older women setting up the foundation of fandom as we know it today :)

Srsly. It’s very much a response to fandom’s misogyny and refusal to acknowledge that older women are allowed to have non-mainstream interests— I’ve seen so many young people tell adults in fandom to go knit or do their taxes or spend time with their children or otherwise try to devalue the amount of time, energy and enjoyment older women put into and create in fandom. And it’s really just a reiteration of the standard sexism that devalues anything adult women have interest in. Especially since that hatred is rarely leveled with the same kind of virulence at men.

And then when those women push back, they get called troublemakers and worse than reactionary racists.

Nope. No. You’re wrong. Color photos have been around since the late 1800s there are a bunch of full color photos of MLK. The us govt and educational system just doesn’t show us because they want us to push back the civil rights movement and distance institutionalized racism from today’s society.

Here are just a few of many photos of MLK in FULL color. This wasn’t that long ago. This is RECENT history. Segregation, the terrorizing of black communities, the brutality isn’t old - it is still present.

When my dad was a little boy, my grandfather was one of the ministers who marched with MLK on Washington. He grew up hearing stories about the great Dr. king and the differences he made BUT he still saw the blatant discrimination against black folks and other people of color (hell he experienced it himself). My dad was a kid watching MLK. My DAD. My grandfather who only passed away about six years ago MARCHED with him. This isn’t twelve generations ago. THIS IS RECENT HISTORY.

I’m a millennial and my parents were both in middle school when he was murdered. This really wasn’t that long ago.

This is the first colour photograph we know of. It’s a tartan ribbon, taken by Thomas Sutton using the three-colour method. It was taken in 1861.

transprophetess:

everybody just latched onto “terf = enemy” and then never again put any thought into why that is, and what transmisogyny is, so they just make a big deal out of being an anti-terf instead of understanding the problem in the first place

Some stuff to know:

TERF - Trans Excluding/Erasing Radical Feminist:

Someone who believes that trans women are not women and don’t belong in women’s spaces. They believe that trans women are predatory cis men pretending to be women in order to have sex with lesbians.

SWERF - Sex Worker Excluding/Erasing Radical Feminist:

Someone who believes that sex workers (those who make money from pornography or prostitution) are not feminist / not valuable / should not be welcome in feminist / women’s spaces. They believe that women participating in pornography or prostitution are upholding patriarchy and damaging the feminist movement.

Truscum aka transmedicalists:

Someone who believes that you must experience body dysphoria in order to be trans. They also tend to be attached to the gender binary and erase or exclude anyone who does not conform to a male / female gender identity (genderfluid, non-binary, agender, bi-gender, etc)

Ace exclusionists:

Someone who believes that ace-spectrum people are not inherently LGBTQ+ and do not belong in LGBTQ+ spaces. They see ace people as secretly cis/straight invaders and leeches to LGBTQ+ programs and resources. They also tend to believe that the definition of LGBTQ+ centres around those who experience discrimination for same-sex attraction, and therefore ace folk do not belong.

Trans women are women.
Non-medical trnas people are trans.
Ace people are LGBTQIA+.

Know why we do not welcome these people.

Whale powering up to the surface and breaching

I love how you have no fucking idea of the scope and majesty you are about to witness until you realize just what KIND of whale is zooming up to the surface and how fucking FAST that thing has to be going to catch that kind of air time.

Whales are scary fast!

Look at this little baby go!

Humpback whales look all slow and majestic riiight up to the point where they decide they need to be somewhere else like, immediately

I remember an article that interveiwed a National Geographic photographer and he said the most terrifying shoot for him was one where they were getting pictures of humpbacks feeding on schools of fish.

“Its the size and speed of a freight train and you’d never know if one was coming at you becuase underwater they don’t make a damn sound.”

National Geographic photographers are a breed above

There was a story from some whale-watchers, they were going to see humpback whales and then all of a sudden the guides start freaking out. See, humpbacks blow a circle of bubbles to corral fish, so then can swoop up and swallow as many as they can in one go.

And their boat was right in the middle of that circle of a bubbles.

Thankfully, the whale must have seen the boat at the last minute and adjusted course, because it breached a few meters away, but everyone on that boat needed new pants.

ultrafacts:

Edward Charles Pickering (director of the Harvard Observatory from 1877 to 1919) decided to hire women as skilled workers to process astronomical data. Among these women were Williamina Fleming, Annie Jump Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt and Antonia Maury. This staff came to be known as the Harvard Computers.

The first woman hired was Williamina Fleming, who was working as a maid for Pickering. It seems that Pickering was increasingly frustrated with his male assistants and declared that even his maid could do a better job. Apparently he was not mistaken, as Fleming undertook her assigned chores efficiently. When the Harvard Observatory received in 1886 a generous donation from the widow of Henry Draper, Pickering decided to hire more female staff and put Fleming in charge.

As a result of the work of the women “computers”, Pickering published in 1890 the first Henry Draper Catalog, a catalog with more than 10,000 stars classified according to their spectrum. Pickering decided to hire Antonia Maury, a graduate from Vassar College, to reclassify some of the stars. Maury decided to go further and improved and redesigned the system of classification. It was published in 1897, but was largely ignored. Afterwards Pickering decided to hire Cannon, a graduate of Wellesley College, to classify the southern stars. As Maury had done, Cannon also ended up redesigning the classification system of the spectra and developed the Harvard Classification Scheme, which constitutes the basis of the system used today.

Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s insight that all the variable stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud are roughly the same distance from Earth, led to her discovering a direct relationship between the period of Cepheid variable stars and their intrinsic brightness. This discovery, in turn, led to the modern understanding of the true size of the universe, and Cepheid variables are still an essential tool for the measurement of cosmological distance.

I’m curious if his declaration that his maid could do better was a) an insult to his assistants that a random woman could do better, or b) the realization that the maid he occasionally talked to about his work followed it far better than the imbeciles he was forced to work with.

“But we do want you.” Venom looks confused. He never used to look this confused, but seems to be making a habit of it in this conversation.

Eddie sighs, running his fingers through his hair for the thousandth time. It must be sticking up everywhere by now. “But you don’t need me, that’s what I mean.”

“Of course we need you!” Venom half wails, “We would die without you, Eddie!”

“Not like that!” Oh fuck, how is Eddie supposed to explain any of this? “I mean I- I need you. I want you. Sexually. I want to have sex with you, and you don’t.”

“But we do.” Venom slumps in his arms. He’s so lost, he doesn’t understand. “Of course we want to-”

“You want to because I do.” Eddie says finally. “To make me happy and- satisfied and all that mammalian stuff. If I didn’t want to have sex, would you?”

Venom pauses, doesn’t answer at once. Eddie closes his eyes. He knows the answer. Oh, it’s no hardship for Vee, it’s not like he doesn’t like sex, but it’s just- an Eddie thing. Like eating back guys is a Vee thing. And Eddie doesn’t mind eating bad guys, it’s fun, and Venom needs the food. But sex-

It’s not just the physical part of it. If Eddie wanted that he’d keep it between him and his right hand. He wants to be wanted. He wants to know the person he’s with looks at him with desire.

Annie had, Annie’s eyes would just- light up, every time he took his shirt off. God, it felt so good.

“And we cannot do that.” Venom looks away, and Eddie feels a bolt of self-loathing that isn’t his. Just a small thing, that Eddie wants, such a small thing and he couldn’t even do that-

“Hey hey, no.” Eddie pulls him close. “Don’t think like that. It’s not your fault.” He sighs. “It’s not anyone’s fault.”

For a moment, he wishes they weren’t so close. It’s the best and dearest thing they have, their connection, but just for this, it would be better to have some space. They could pretend, not ask the awkward questions and try and ignore the reality in front of them-

Wouldn’t have worked, Eddie.

“Nah.” Eddie agrees. “No wonder I fuck up relationships.”

“We could-” Venom can barely get the words out and it’s killing him, but, “If you want. We could go- there are people. Like us. Who aren’t interested. We read about them. We could- go. You wouldn’t have to-”

“No!” Eddie yells, hands tightening on Venom, in case he tried even now to pull away. “Hell fuck no. I don’t want- I want you here, I never want to you to-” He swallows, because what if Venom does? “If you wanted to-” he whispers. “If it would work better for you-”

“No!” But Venom is sliding into his arms, huddling against his chest, warm and slick in his hands. “Never, Eddie. Only you.”

Eddie nods, and feels the awful panic slowly bank in his stomach, fading to cool shivers. “I love you.” Eddie whispers.

“I love you too, Eddie.” Venom lifts his head and presses his mouth to Eddie, he loves this, at least. Kissing is a revelation to Vee, but sex-

Well, he doesn’t even have the parts for it, the nervous system for arousal, and even if he did, that’s still no guarantee. Plenty of people don’t feel sexual attraction.

“If you wanted to,” Venom murmurs, almost too low to hear, as if Eddie can’t feel the word reverberate in the chambers of his heart, “You could find someone else. Just for sex. We wouldn’t mind, as long as it was just sex, nothing else.”

Eddie shakes his head, for him at least, it was never just sex. “It’s okay. I’ll be okay.” He’s had dry spells before, and they didn’t bother him too much. “If you can put up with porn and me jerking off now and then.”

“We still want to help.” Venom looks at him pleadingly, wide white eyes adorable in his sleek head. “You are beautiful in pleasure, Eddie, we can feel that, we want to see it.”

Eddie smiles, “I think we can work something out.”
